Transitioning from two planks to one, the Telus festival charges on. The Grenade Games fired up today on Blackcomb Mountain as athletes duked it out on a hard and fast Dual Slalom moguls course. Dano Pendygrasse blogs that the course scared everyone sh*tless – that just about sums it up …
The side-by-side slalom courses on Catskinner featured a combo of gates, moguls and a jump for mandatory air at the very bottom. To add a little twist, competitors also had to dodge a snowball attack before they crossed the finish line – if they made it that far.
The who’s who of snowboarding media were on hand to document the epic snowboard comp. Meanwhile, the infamous Grenade Games duo, pro rider and legend Danny Kass and Luke “the Dingo” Tremblath were hosting the party slopeside.
Despite the fact that this event has a snowboard focus, a few snowbladers took time out of shredding to come and watch the event. I’m not really sure what else to say about that.
In the end, a seriously stoked Myrosha Dayley won first prize. Watch Myrosha’s acceptance speech here.
Then, after successfully completing a ballsy back-flip off one of the jumps, Sammy Luebke won a sought-after Golden Ticket, a wildcard, that carries competitors on to the Grand Finale.
This is a little off topic, but I noticed a few Magna-traction “noboards” among the sea of snowboards. I’m intrigued. A short snowboard without bindings: the snowblade of boarding or the evolution of snowboarding? I say this only half seriously.
Anyways, the next two days of the Grenade Games will take place in Whistler Blackcomb’s Superpipe. These guys are going big or going home.
From sunshine to snowflakes, today has been a mixed bag for weather. I managed to catch Yuca before it started puking snow. These guys were simply stoked to be in Whistler playing for the festival. Good vibes and good music.
I finished off the day at the Blake Jorgensen gallery one-year anniversary party. The gallery is currently featuring epic photos from Blake’s trip to Alaska with a group of top pro athletes.
Tomorrow is a pretty big day as far as the festival goes. We have The Stills as part of the Zune Concert Series. Tomorrow night, there’s the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown. Following that, Thievery Corporation is playing.
Hot tip of the day: Hit the GLC patio for après-ski and get a great view of the free outdoor concerts.
